Vintage by Letter: A is for Aprons

I am going to start posting something that will hopefully inspire me to post more. I am going to be featuring vintage items that are for sale around the internet by letter. This will be something for me to post when I am not feeling particularly inspired. Oh, and it doesn't hurt that I will probably want to buy it all.

These are just a few aprons that caught my eye, this is the full list of aprons on Etsy, and yes, the have ALOT.

Questions and an Award

Sorry for the slacking in posting, I have been very busy these past couple of days. I went to visit some family and friends over the weekend. I went to Atlantic City again on Saturday night to celebrate my friend Kate's birthday. (Bad girl, I went twice in one week!) Which reminds me that I have to post about my first Atlantic City trip still.

I wanted to let everyone that reads this blog know that I am using Formspring, which is a website where you can ask anyone that signs up questions anonymously or as a logged in user. I would like to create a blog post around answering these. So if you feel so inclined to ask a question submit one in about a week or so I will post with my answers.

I also wanted to thank C.K. at Hollywood Dreamland for awarding me with the One Lovely Blog Award, it certainly means alot to me that people enjoy reading what I write here.

Spring Inspiration

So instead of Film Actress Friday, I spent my night putting together some fashion collages. I hope these will give some inspiration. I was thinking ahead to Spring and what would be some cute vintage-esque looks but with modern pieces.

Hope you all enjoy your weekend, I may have my Atlantic City post up this tomorrow or Sunday.

Christina Hendricks on New York Magazine

For those of you who are Mad Men fans you will be pleased to hear if you haven't already that the lovely Christina Hendricks is on the cover of the current issue of New York Magazine.

This is the photo that is featured on the website. Unfortunately as always they tend to focus more on her (beautiful!) body instead of her acting. I wish they would give her character on Mad Men more attention, I really believe she is the better of the actresses on the show... and yes, that is saying alot. I think that her body should be just as notorious as her acting skills.

Anyway, if you are interested you can read the article here or buy the magazine. I will be finally going on my overnight trip to Atlantic City tomorrow, so if I am not back sooner, I will see you all for Film Actress Friday. Enjoy the rest of your week!

Film Actress Friday: Maria Felix

Part of doing Film Actress Friday to me is celebrating and showcasing actresses that aren't as widely recognized as others. I believe this happens alot with foreign actresses because of many of us are so interested in American Cinema that we never discover the icons of other countries cinema. With that being said this week I am featuring Maria Felix.

-She was born in 1914 in Alamos, Sonora, Mexico
-Her given name was Maria de los Angeles Felix Guerena
-She is an icon 0f the Golden Age of Mexican Cinema
-She was discovered in Mexico City by a business man who introduced her to filmmaker Miguel Zacarias who cast her in El Penon de las Animas
-In 1943 she starred in directors Fernando de Fuentes's 'Dona Barbara', she also worked with him in 1944 and again in 1946's 'La Devoradora' which made her a vamp of mexican cinema
-She refused to accept small roles from Hollywood and lost a role in 1945's 'Duel in the Sun' because of work commitments, because of this she never received the same popularity in the US
-In 1946 she started working with director Emilio Fernandez who helped launch her career through Europe
-In the late 40s to the early 60s she worked in films in Spain, France and Italy
-In 1959 she starred in 'La Cucaracha' with Dolores del Rio
-She was an inspiration to many designers and was dressed by Dior, Yves Saint Laurent, Chanel and Balenciaga
-Hermes designed creations especially for her
-She collected antiques and jewelry
-She owned the 41.37 carat D-flawless "Ashoka" diamond
-In 1968 she commissioned Cartier for a serpent diamond necklace which included 178.21 carats of diamonds
-In 1975 she asked them to design for her again, a necklace in the shape of 2 crocodiles. It included 524.9 grams of gold, 1,023 yellow diamonds and 1,060 emeralds
-Since her 2002 death in Mexico City, the jewelry pieces have been displayed as part of The Art of Cartier Collection
-In 2006 as a tribute to her Cartier debuted it's La Dona de Cartier collection

Marisa Tomei in My Cousin Vinny

How is everyone doing? I hope those also on the East Coast have weathered the storm we got. I was kind of getting used to regularity ceasing because of the snow, but tomorrow life will go on as normal. Although apparently we are supposed to be getting some more snow next week.

Anyway, again this isn't vintage... but it is getting there! I watched 'My Cousin Vinny' tonight. Surprisingly enough, although I am from NJ I have never watched this all the way through... but I did and I loved it!

For those who haven't seen it, it's from 1992 and Marisa Tomei stars opposite Joe Pesci as Mona Lisa Vito. Marisa Tomei won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar that year for her work. There was alot of controversy about her win, but I really think she was very brilliant in this role... I also saw her in The Wrestler and was as equally impressed.

Besides that, she is absolutely gorgeous in this film. And her clothing as crazy as it is (I mean this is 1992, right?) is really inspiring. I love her eyebrows. Oh and that flower jumpsuit... I want one of those. You really need to see the film to get the full effect of that outfit. And her signature one blonde streak behind the ear makes me want to grab a box of dark hair dye and leave out a blonde streak.

For those who haven't seen it, check it out... and check out these stills.

Atlantic City

So the trip I was supposed to go on today was over night to Atlantic City. Unfortunately this winter storm decided to come. Right now outside it is a little more slushy than snowy, but they are calling for it to change back into snow later today so we are still not going to go.

However, I am going to share some vintage photos I found of Atlantic City on the internet.

Going to be snowbound!

Here on the East Coast we have been promised another very big snow storm.

Unfortunately this snow comes at a bad time since I was supposed to go on an overnight trip tomorrow and had to cancel. I will post more on that tomorrow as I am going to do a post on the location I was going to stay.

But while I have you all reading I wanted to encourage anyone who might be interested to stop on over to my "real life" friend Emilie's blog. She just started blogging this week, so stop by and welcome her. She is a new stay at home mom with a 6 month old daughter. Although it is unrelated to vintage she is hilarious and for those who find it of interest will see that she is super quick witted and sassy. I actually laugh out loud reading the ridiculous things she says. You can visit here.

Riot Grrrl: Kathleen Hanna

I hope you all will forgive me for going a little bit in my own direction with this post. Anyway, I have always been really into riot grrrl music and tonight I wanted to write about Kathleen Hanna since I pretty much can't stop playing Bikini Kill.

For those who aren't familiar Kathleen Hanna is a musician, activist and writer. She performed in Bikini Kill, Le Tigre, and a solo project Julie Ruin. She may not be everyones cup of tea but I think she is a strong female in power of herself, instead of the many produced popstars we see.

Here are some videos I found on YouTube for those of you interested... unfortunately even though this was the 90s... not many great videos of the music exist that I have seen, well, high quality I should say.

I've been out sick!

Sorry friends, I have completely been neglecting blogging this week. I even missed film actress friday. Let me explain, I have had an evil stomach virus this week that was passed to me. That took me out for a couple of days, I am finally starting to feel like myself but those of you on the East Coast will know that we got another storm this weekend that hasn't added to my motivation at all.

I will try to get back to normal next week!
(Also, I found this cute picture on flickr, it is not mine! but it was too cute and accurate not to borrow!)
